TLC Greyhound Adoption of Kansas was notified Tuesday - May 5 by Warden Sam Cline of the Hutchinson Correctional Facility that the prison greyhound program is being terminated as of July 1, 2009.
When asked "why" - TLC was told that because of budget cuts, other prison facilities were being closed and the Hutchinson Correctional Facility would be seeing an influx of inmates from other areas
in the state. More room would be needed to house the inmates. Warden Cline is going to keep one of the two foster dog programs - unfortunately for us, he has decided to get rid of the greyhound program
(after 10 successful years of inmate fostering and basic obedience training). TLC funds all expenses connected with the program, except dog food - Wal-Mart donates broken bags of dog food to the dog programs at the HCF.
The state of Kansas has no money tied up in the program and until now, it has been a win-win situation. The inmates were taught to take care of something; they were taught to train with positive reinforcement
and reward; and they were taught to let go when their greyhound was adopted. The greyhounds flourished under constant love and attention, learned good house manners, as well as basic obedience commands.
We will be scrambling to find other adoption groups to help take some of the HCF greyhounds. If you're considering adopting one of the wonderful greys on the Available Hounds page...please act now. TLC will continue
to foster and help greyhounds find their perfect forever homes - on a much smaller scale.
